As the air cools and our daylight shortens in September, there are still many tasks to do in the garden:
Reseed, aerate and feed the lawn.
Prep the garden beds for winter and next year’s garden season. Keep in mind, to help the ‘little things that run the world’ (insects), it is good to leave your stems 12-18” tall, leave the leaf litter (unless it is diseased) and create a debris pile for shelter in the winter.
Divide any perennials that should be divided in fall.
Consider taking cuttings of annual flowers to root indoors. This includes herbs for using through the winter.
Plant spring blooming bulbs. Consider native spring ephemerals.
Pick flowers, seed heads and pods for dried arrangements.
Collect annual and perennial seed for winter sowing or sowing directly in the garden next year.
Clear spent vegetable plants and plant cover crops or cover with compost.
Plant quick-maturing or cool weather crops to over-winter.
Plant garlic.
Bring houseplants inside when temps reach 55F
Above all, enjoy the cooler temperatures and beautiful colors of fall!
MinervaFlora continues to have meetings the first Sunday of each month (September will be the 2nd Sunday due to Labor Day) and we meet through the week at various locations to maintain village gardens. Please consult FB and village emails for more info.
